Mission:

Water is a core necessity in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the UN and I believe it is imperative to provide access to clean water and sanitation for all. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to clean water, with some waters containing lots of microorganisms that are harmful for public health, for example potentially toxic cyanobacteria species.  However, we can use these microorganisms to advance our circular economy. If treated properly, we can utilise some cyanobacterial and algal species to produce energy and food.

I have demonstrated capacity to primarily aim my research activities at evolution of water treatment challenges brought about by climate change, with specific experience in how climate change and harmful algal blooms (HABs) affect water treatment, removal of combined microbial/chemical contaminants and reuse opportunities. I have also broadened my research focus to the use of microalgae for “energy” and “food” production. Let’s turn this situation to our advantage by empowering our future generation to not only provide clean water, but also turn it into energy and food for all. This mission has become even more vital for me after the birth of my son Phoenix, as I now understand the unconditional love of parents for their children and the pain of seeing one’s child hungry or sick. Our collective effort is the phoenix which will rise to provide a bright clean future for us and generations to come!
